Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD’s)

Learner’s Mindset Discussions are essentially the outline of our three book series, the Learner’s Mindset. Dr. Harapnuik and I have several videos that address contemporary topics and issues in education with the common thread of “changing the world, one learner at a time.” Our Academic Videocast Series is conversational and informal so all listeners can enjoy our conversations. Below is an introduction to the videos and a sampling of some of my favorites. 🙂

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) Getting Started Ep 01. Sets the context for future Learner’s Mindset Discussions

————————————————————————————————

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) What is the Learner’s Mindset Ep 08. In this episode, we discuss what the learner’s mindset is and how we need to preserve and foster this mindset in our learners. Rather than allow the learner’s mindset to be quenched by our content and standards-based system the authors argue that we need to nurture this natural human capacity that all of our children are born with. The way to preserve this intrinsic ability to give create significant learning environments in which we give our learners choice, ownership, and voice through authentic learning opportunities.

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) Crucial Conversations Ep 29. In this episode we explore how important it is to have crucial conversation and identify the key factors that will enable you to communicate effectively. In a time when it is getting harder to converse civilly, understanding and practicing the crucial conversations methodology is more important than ever.

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) Genius Hour Isn’t a Quick Fix Ep 04. We discuss how Genius Hour, 20% time, Passion Projects and similar activities can be much more effective if we don’t try to use them as a quick fix. We also argue that if these student centred activities that give learners the opportunity to engage in their passions are much more effective if they are used for the majority of the instructional time and test prep should be limited to 20% time.

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) Reading for Deeper Learning Ep 11. In this episode, we discuss how to important it is to read for deeper learning. Rather than just reading at the inspectional level we suggest learners go deeper and move into the analytical and synoptical levels of reading. Our educational system’s emphasis on standardized testing and information regurgitation has an unfortunately side effect of not requiring learners to move into analytical and synoptical reading which results in deeper learning and understanding.

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) Personalized Learning Ep 16. In this episode, we discuss how to put the personal into personalized learning. All too often educators make the mistake in assuming a piece of software or a computer based drill is personalized learning. While these tools are useful in helping learners develop or practice skills the personalized aspect or learning is developed when an educator looks at the learners preparedness and creates a significant learning environment in which the learner has choice ownership and voice through authentic learning opportunities. This is what makes learning personalized.

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) The Power of Story Ep 19. In this episode, we discuss the power of story and how educators can use storytelling to effectively share their message and motivate people to action. If you aren’t using storytelling in your presentations then people will more than likely be tuning out or even ignoring your message.

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) Fostering Intrinsic Motivation Ep 21. In this episode, we discuss what it takes to develop foster intrinsic motivation. Research is clear; our system of education has a tendency to kill intrinsic motivation. If you want your learners to develop intrinsic motivation you need to create a significant learning environment in which your learners have choice ownership and voice through authentic learning opportunities. If you shift to a learner centred environment then you foster intrinsic motivation and is so easily crushed by our system of education.

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) Learning First Then Tech Ep 25. In this episode, we discuss how important it is to focus on the learning first and then look to technology to enhance the learning. All too often, hopes for innovation are attached to the deployment of a piece of hardware or software. If you focus on the technology then you are forced to conform the learning to the limitations of the technology. If you focus on learning first the technology will actually disappear when it takes it place as a tool to enhance creativity, collaboration, communication, exploration and innovation.

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) If You Believe or Don’t It’s True Ep 22. In this episode, we explore the notion that if you believe something or not then it it is true. Our belief in our ability or lack of ability often determines whether or not we even try something. Research is clear; a learners belief about their results is accurately aligned with their actual results. If you want learners to see challenges as opportunities for growth and learning then they need to develop a learner’s mindset which empowers them to become lifelong learners. A learner’s mindset enables one to be a perpetual or lifelong learners who sees opportunities where most people see challenges.

Learner’s Mindset Discussions (LMD) Authority Vs Influence EP 27. In this episode, we discuss how change is brought about by influence rather than authority. Too many people believe they are not able to influence change in their organization because they do not hold a position of authority. Yet, real change happens when people decide to change and they choose to follow the influence of others.
